He was the magistrate at Hopetown who advised John Robert O'Reilly to take the stone entrusted to him by Schalk Jacobus van Niekerk, d11e9 to Colesberg for further analysis. It later became known as the Eureka diamond, the first big diamond discovered in South Africa, starting the Kimberley Diamond Rush.
