William had been killed at the races prior to 1866 and his father John was an invalid in the care of Mary Diggan Williams wife.

William died on 18/06/1862 the coroners inquest can be found in the media section of this profile

John (senior) remained at Ballycohey and in a letter dated November 12, 1866 to his son Thomas tells how his youngest son John had eloped with Ellen Heffernan to America where he subsequently died. Another son, William, had been killed at the races leaving him (John senior) as an invalid in the care of William’s widow, Mary Diggan/Deegan/Duggan.

Killed at the Dog Races, Barrowstown

This is more likely to have been the Dog Races at Barronstown, just 2 klms away near Limerick junction which is the current location of the Tipperary Racecourse

The Barronstown Course became the venue for hosting Tipperary Races, when its first recorded race meeting was organised on 27 March 1848. For more than six decades, Barronstown remained the centre of local racing attention, despite an abandonment lasting from 1871/1872 due to an outbreak of smallpox. then more racing to 1881 then in 1916 when the races where moved to a new location at Limerick Junction now called Tipperary Racecourse.
