What else?

In Ireland two historic events govern the availability of historical records.

First of all the partition of Ireland in 1921 when six of the nine counties of Ulster remained within the United Kingdom and the Irish Free State was created. The administration centre for Northern Ireland became Belfast while Dublin continued as the administrative centre for the other 26 counties.

Secondly in 1922 there was a fire in the Public Records Office of Ireland in Dublin. This fire destroyed much of the source material relating to the centralized government administration of Ireland before partition.

For this reason the 1901 and 1911 census records have been made available to the general public. They are held in the National Archives in Dublin and also online 1901 & 1911 Irish census records online

Ireland can be a very difficult country to do research, when looking for your Irish roots take note that just as in England, full records did not become available till 1864.
Most record registration before this time was only a church registration and often it was up to the priest what information was supplied on the records.

Saying this there is a wealth of information out there , you just have to know where to find it and helping one and another is very important in this.

How to create profiles

When creating a profile for an Irish ancestors please enter at least an estimated year of birth,or even better the full date of birth. This will prevent that we all receive thousands of match notifications for a John Murphy for example. Some names are very common so if you can tell more about the profiles it will also make it easier to find the correct connection to other Geni users.
