John Gregory born Runcorn 1881

Does anyone have any information on John Gregory son of Mary Ellen Griffiths and John Gregory after 1891?

He supposedly went to South Africa about 1900 fought in the second Boer war, was allocated land and farmed there. I cannot find any records for him after the 1891 census when he was living with his maternal Grandparents. William and Ellen Griffiths at Weston Cross Farm, Weston Cheshire.

I am also searching for a John Gregory, me great great grandfather, who resided in Johannesburg, South Africa, but I have a feeling yours and mine are not one and the same.
