"I was born November 9, 1873, in the village of Oberhallau, Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland, the youngest child of Johannes (born1830) and Margaretha Bauman (born 1831) Graf. It was about the first of March 1883 that my sisters Elizabeth, Rosa, and Louise, and my brother Adam and I left our paternal home in company of our cousin Gottfried Bauman. We embarked March 3 at Antwerp on the ship "Switzerland", the smallest and oldest of the Red Star Line."
