Haplogroup U5b is one of two primary branches of one of the oldest haplogroups in Europe, U5. Members of U5 likely spread throughout Europe around 30,000 years ago. The U5b branch, however, traces back to a woman who lived approximately 23,000 years ago, when mile-thick glaciers covered the northern half of Europe. During that period humans were pushed back out of the interior and confined to small refuges in the southern part of the continent, where her descendants not only survived but also gave rise to additional diverse branches of U5b.

The process continued after the ice melted and allowed humans to repopulate the continent, spreading branches of U5b to widely scattered regions.
