Connecticut Nutmegger Vol 7, page 278, has Mercy Slawson as the wife of Stephen Bishop. I just got a question about Stephen Bishop's wife, Mercy, and was looking to see if her surname was known and if there was any proof of her surname being Slawson.
The wife of Samuel Bishop appears to have the same dates as the wife of Stephen Bishop and I'm wondering if there was a merge done in error in the past.
I'll keep looking, but am hoping others will chime in here.
Erica Howton - I see your Curator Note about the wife of Stephen Bishop.
Private User - you manage Samuel Bishop and Mercy Slawson Bishop.
A confusing lady.

All the sources of information that I have regarding my 8th great grandfather, Stephen Bishop (1664-1722, Stamford) show him married to either a Mercy ??? (as shown in "God's Country" by Jay Harris, referencing the Stamford Register) or that he was married to a Mercy Slawson (b. abt. 1662)--so say Bishop sources. However, on Milton Slauson's valuable suggestion I ordered the Slauson, Slawson, etc... book as a microfilm at the local LDS Family History Center. I cannot find a Mercy Slawson born about 1662. I have seen her father shown as being both George and George's son, John (with wife Sarah Tuttle). The alleged Mercy's birthdate corresponds more with John than with George. But, there is no mention of a Mercy or Mary in either man's will. I've also tried to see if perhaps Mercy ??? married a Slawson and then was widowed and then remarried Stephen Bishop, but I can't make a match that way, either. Does anyone have any helpful clues as to the identity of Stephen Bishop's wife? Also, my husband is descended from George Slawson, too!

In other words - she didn’t exist. That name was written somewhere, sometime, but she can’t be found. I suppose the original marriage record could be pulled for a handwriting interpretation - did Pierson look like Slawson? But it’s moot, since there’s no birth record.
