Just some background. Barkly West was founded in 1870 under the name "Klipdrift". This is a now the brand name of a RSA brandy often referred to as Klippies. The area was also known as "Diggers Republic"before it was annexed by the Crown. Named after Sir Henry Barkly the Governor of the Cape. It is a farming area due to water taken off the Orange River. I will keep looking for Van Niekerks places.
