Nancy was the daughter of Absalom Petty & Martha Clanton her grandparent's James & Martha Petty came with a group of Virginia families from Lunenburg, sometime in the 1750's. They travelled by Ox and Wagon on the Great Wagon trail into the Piedmont region of the Waxhaws of the Carolinas and settled on Robinsons Creek near the Haw River tributary situated in Orange/ Chatham county twenty miles above the forks on the north branch of Cape Fear, and Deep River and Caraway Creek. They were faithful members of Haw Baptist Church founded by Rev. Shubal Stearns.

Rev. Shubal Sterns left Sandy Creek Baptist Church and settled on Dry Creek part of Haw Creed tributary in Chatham County twenty miles above the forks on the north branch of the Cape Fear. He established the Haw River Baptist Church and established six branches of houses of worship near the forks where people settled. One of the church branches of Haw River Church was Rocky River Church established in 1757 by Shubal Sterns on the banks o the Rocky River a tributary of Deep River. James Petty's sister Rebecca Petty married Thomas Sims a relative of Elder Drury Sims the minister of Rocky river Church. Rocky River flows east to Tar River, Granville North Carolina Rev. Henry Ledbetter was the minister of Tar River Baptist Church.

James Petty Jr. the son of James Petty Sr. & Martha Clanton married Sarah, their daughter Catherine Petty had a child of wedlock with Millington Middleton Ledbetter their son Solomon James Petty was born on the 23rd of 1783 in Union SC. Millington Middleton Ledbetter was the son of Lewis Ledbetter a relative of Rev. Henry Ledbetter. A financial settlement was finalised between the parents of Catherine Petty & Millington Ledbetter (record 23 March 1786)

James Petty Sr. & Martha Clanton were members of Sandy River Church in Camden district SC; Martha Petty was one of the founders of its sister church Pacolet Baptist Church (now called Skull Shoals) Rev. Fowler & Rev. Isaac Edwards ministers.

Absalom Petty left a will that was proved in 1802, it mentions a daughter Nancy Petty without a married name and was likely written before Nancy's marriage to James N. Hembree.

The daughter of James Petty Jr. Sarah Petty had a child out of wedlock with Millington Middleton Ledbetter the son of Lewis Ledbetter and Sarah Millington.

James N. Hembree & Nancy Petty's daughter Cynthia Loudon Hembree married William Middleton Roark the grandson of William Payne & Catherine Middleton of Newberry South Carolina. The Roark family was related to the Middleton & Ledbetter families and removed with them to Missouri & then to Denton TX. Dorinda another daughter of James N. Hembree and Nancy Petty married Samuel Chesser in Missouri, his sister Martha Patsy Chesser married a Ledbetter.
