Archibald Calvin Gaddis - Confusing

I'm confused why Archibald's surname is Gaddis but he has parents with the surname Ray and then his wife has the maiden name Ray. Shouldn't Archibald be a Ray rather than a Gaddis or was he adopted by them? There's nothing in his Overview to explain why his surname doesn't match his parents.

Any clarification would help.
