Ella Mae Webster - Parents

I'm related to her husband, so was adding her into my tree and noticed that Ancestry trees and Hints have different parents for her than here on Geni. They show:

Ella Mae Webster (Waite)
BIRTH: 6 November 1873 Onerville, New York, USA
DEATH: 1943 Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York, USA

sources (18)records (17)

Family Info

Father
Chester P Webster (1835–)

Mother
Malisa A. Webster (1836–)

Only one source shows her parents as those listed here on Gen but they show her mother's maiden name as Babcock, which isn't showing as such in her Geni profile, but looking at her parents - Lucy's maiden name does appear to be Babcock.

I don't know if Geni and the one other source have the parents for Ella Mae correct or if they were, in fact, Chester P. Webster and a wife named Malisa. It doesn't help that on Ancestry there is a New York, U.S., State Census, 1875 showing her parents as Chester and Lucy and a 1880 United States Federal Census showing her parents as Chester P. and Malisa.

If there is additional information to clarify who her parents were, it would be good to add that to her profile since there are conflicting parents connected to her, depending on sites. Thanks.

Hi
Debbie Gambrell
Ella Mae was my 2nd great grandmother and her parents were Lucy A. (Babcock) Colburn Webster and Chester Webster. The 1880 US Census does have "Malisa", but it is the only one I've found with that name. Most of the other sources for Lucy have her as "Lucy". Why it has Malisa, I don't know.
I've added the NYS Census 1875 and the US Census 1900 (where Lucy Webster is living with her son, George). I found a couple of newspaper articles with Lucy which I will add when I find them again.
I've added the 1855 NYS census which shows her as " Lucy Babcock", daughter of Jeremiah and Lydia Babcock. Also, there is the marriage record of her son, John Colburn, ( youngest son from her first marriage) which shows Lucy as John's parent, Lucy Babcock.
I added a picture of Lucy with her oldest son, Charles Colburn, and his family as well as Ella Mae and her family up to that point (1910).

I'm not on Ancestry so I can't address that, but I've added the censuses and the pic to Lucy's profile. When I find the newspaper article, I'll add those as well. Hopefully, these additions clear up her name.
Thanks for your questions and concerns

Thanks so much, Kandy. Nothing better than a close relative to have clarifying info such as you provided. Lucy and Chester were the least listed on Ancestry, so your input has been invaluable. Hopefully by my adding those connections in my tree others will check the info more before adding Malisa as Lucy's mother in their trees. I will put a link to her Geni profile on her profile in my Ancestry tree so others can check all the documentation you've added there.

All that said, Ella Mae's husband Charles Emmett Waite is my distant cousin with shared Cherry ancestors. Since Ella Mae and Charles are your ancestors, we're cousins on the Cherry lines. I don't 'meet' a lot of Cherry cousins online, so it's nice to know that's how we connect.

You're welcome, Debbie. I'm just glad there are so many sources for Lucy; farther back, there isn't much - other than oral tradition.
Yes, the Cherrys were a surprise for my family. We knew that Virginia "Jane" Cherry was our 3rd great grandmother, but that she was from Virginia was a revelation. Also, the Smiths who married into the Cherrys, were Tuscarora through Frances Smith.

What I've found with the Cherrys to be helpful, are the Wills they made. They seem to have been more prevalent in the South -very helpful in placing people and their families.
I'm grateful you reached out.

Kandy, my Hodge line that connects with my Cherry line has NA in it. With so many Cherrys marrying folks with NA ancestry, it does make me wonder if they had it in their lines as well, but I haven't found evidence of it so far. If you ever do, please let me know.

I don't have Frances (Smith) Cherry in my tree. I'll have to look her up.

Oh, sorry! There was another family between the Cherrys and the Smiths...the Prices. I had a memory break down for a moment!

Frances Smith is Kandy Nina Oaks' 9th great grandmother!

I've been working on the Tuscarora in New York and I am related to them through my Seneca family. However, I'm not as familiar with those Tuscarora from North Carolina. Someday, hopefully, I'll find the connection between the New York and North Carolina bands of Tuscarora.
