Festschrift for Professor John H. Lazarus ably organized by Drs. Marian Ludgate and Kuvera Premawardhana was held at University of Wales, Cardiff, on July 11, 2008. The Festschrift attracted a full house, drawn from far and near with the subject matter of the contributions reflecting the breadth of John’s involvement in the investigation of the thyroid gland over a 40-year period. John’s interest in the thyroid was sparked by his attachment to the medical team of Sir Edward Wayne at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. Although Wayne was to provide John’s first introduction to thyroidology, this was further advanced by postgraduate work under Kenneth Sterling at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bronx, New York. The most important influence in John’s career was provided by his long-term friend and mentor Professor Reginald Hall in the Welsh National School of Medicine, Cardiff. John Lazarus’s extraordinarily productive research career (he has to date authored and coauthored 338 articles in peer-reviewed journals, a number that continues to rise, as well as several textbooks) has spanned an era of profound change in the clinical and laboratory investigation of thyroid disease. As is evident from his list of publications, John Lazarus is without question one of the leading authorities on the investigation of thyroid disease in pregnancy, a fact recognized by his inclusion in most major international forums on the subject. He is also the preeminent authority on postpartum thyroiditis and has made important contributions in other areas of thyroid autoimmunity. Although technically retired, John continues to lead the Controlled Antenatal Thyroid Study (CATS) investigating a cohort of 22 000 participants, the results of which are eagerly awaited and will no doubt provide the seminal statement on the subject.
