About Catherine Spalding
Mother Catherine Spalding (December 23, 1793 Charles County, Maryland - March 20, 1858) was an influential American Roman Catholic nun. In 1813, Spalding was elected superior of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky. Under her leadership, they established many schools and hospitals in Kentucky, including the Nazareth Academy (1814), St. Vincent's Academy (1820), St. Catherine's Academy - Lexington (1823), Presentation Academy (1831), St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum (1832), St. Joseph's Hospital (1836), and the School of St. Frances at Owensboro (1850). Spalding University in Louisville is named after her.

The tradition of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCN) asserts that Catherine Spalding was born December 23, 1793, in Charles County, Maryland. She was orphaned early, and she and her sister Ann, also to become an SCN, were reared in Kentucky by an uncle and aunt, Thomas and Elizabeth Spalding Elder. For the last few years before she went to St. Thomas, Catherine lived in the home of her cousin Clementina Elder Clark. This account is probably what Mother Catherine told of herself.
