David’s paternal grandparents were Arthur J. Pierce (the son of Henry T. Pierce and Sarah M.) and Helen E. Hyde (the daughter of George W. Hyde and Mary Annie Lewis). Arthur was Canadian. Sarah was born in Québec, Canada, to Irish parents.
David’s maternal grandparents were Lorado T. Hughes (the son of The Rev. Thomas Bennett Hughes and Sarah Barbara “Sadie” Mayhew) and Mildred Sherman (the daughter of James W. Sherman and Frances “Fannie” J. Hunt). David’s great-grandfather Thomas was Welsh. Frances’ mother Jane was Irish.
