Gordon Sondland, 20th U.S. Ambassador to the European Union

Gordon David Sondland is the founder of Provenance Hotels and co-founder of the merchant bank Aspen Capital. A major donor to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, Sondland was nominated in spring 2018 to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the European Union. He was confirmed by the Senate in June 2018 and a month later he presented his credentials at the European Commission and to President of the European Council Donald Tusk.

On September 26, 2019, the US House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released the unclassified text of a whistleblower complaint regarding the interactions between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In this document, Ambassador Sondland, along with the US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, Ambassador Kurt Volker, were described as having "provided advice to the Ukrainian leadership about how to 'navigate' the demands that the President had made of Mr. Zelenskyy."
