About Jane Franklin

See 'Portrait a Jane'. A life of Lady Franklin by Frances J Woodward, first printed 1951 by Hodder and Stoughton.

Lady (Jane) Franklin nee Griffin (1792-1875, m1828)

Jane Franklin was a friend of Eleanor Anne Porden and after her death married her husband John Franklin as his second wife in 1828. Jane was an indefatigable traveller in her own right in Europe, Syria and North Africa, as well as accompanying her husband to Australia where he was governor of Van Diemen’s Land, 1837-1843. After the disappearance of Franklin’s last Arctic expedition in 1845, Jane Franklin continued to press for investigations into the fate of her husband and his colleagues until proof of their death was found in 1859.

Lady Franklin (Jane Griffin) (1791-1875) was born in London, the daughter of a wealthy Huguenot silk merchant. Her ancestors came from Normandy and Poitou. As the wife of Sir John Franklin, Lt-Governor of Tasmania, she interested herself energetically in convict welfare, education, agricultural reform and the arts. She gave Tasmania its first museum and art gallery. https://huguenotsaustralia.org.au/research/famous-huguenot-people/

Jane Franklin (1791-1875), was born on 4 December 1791, the daughter of John Griffin, silk weaver, of London, and Mary, née Guillemard. In 1828 she married (as his second wife) John Franklin, who was appointed lieutenant-governor of Van Diemen's Land in 1836.
