Biographical Summary

"Sir William Stirling, afterwards (since 1866) Stirling-Maxwell, Baronet [S. 1682], of Pollok, and of Keir, co. Perth, nephew and h., being only s. and h. of Archibald Stirling, of Keir aforesaid, for twenty-five years a Planter in Jamaica (d. 9 April 1847, aged 77), by Elizabeth (d. 5 Sep. 1822), 2d and yst. sister of the late and the only child that had issue of the 7th Baronet. He was b. at Kenmure, near Glasgow, 8 March 1818; admitted to Trin. Coll., Cambridge, 1835; B.A., 1839; M.A., 1843 ; suc. to the estate of Keir on his father's death, 9 April 1847; was M.P. for Perthshire (four Paris.), 1852-68 and 1874 till death in 1878; Dean of Faculties at Glasgow Univ., 1857-60 ; LL.D. (Edinburgh), 1861 ; Rector of St. Andrew's Univ., Nov. 1862 ; suc. to the Baronetcy, 7 June 1865, as heir of entail under the deed of 1 Aug. 1718, executed by the 1st Baronet, but did not assume the title till March 1866, when he had obtained an opinion from as many as four Counsel in his favour as to his right thereto. On this date also he assumed the name of Maxwell in lieu of that of Stirling. He was Rector of the University of Edinburgh, 1872-74; LL.D. (Glasgow), 1873; Hon. LL.D. (Cambridge), 1874; Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, 1875-78; Hon. D.C.L. (Oxford), 1876; K.T., 9 Dec. 1876; well known as an author of historical and other works, and as a collector of sixteenth century engravings. He m. firstly, 26 April 1865, at Paris, Anna Maria, 2d da. of David (Leslie-Melville), Earl of Leven and Melville, [S.], by Elizabeth Anne, da. of Sir Archibald Campbell, 2d Baronet [1808], of Sucooth. She, who was b. Dec. 1826, d. 8 Dec. 1874 (from the effects of a burn on 21 Nov. previous), at Keir. He m. secondly, 1 March 1877 (by spec, lie, the bride being too ill to leave her bed), Caroline Elizabeth Sarah, widow of the Hon. George Chappie Norton, Recorder of Guildford, 2d da. of Thomas Sheridan, by Caroline Henrietta, da. of James Callandeb, of Craigforth, afterwards James Campbell, of Ardinglass. She, who was b. at 11, South Audley street, in 1808, d. 15 June 1877, at 10 Upper Grosvenor street (about three months after her marriage), and was bur. at Keir, aged about 69. He d. (seven months later) at Venice, of typhoid fever, 15 Jan. 1878, in his 60th year, and was bur. in Lecropt church."
