About Abel/Abram Scronce
Abraham Scronce, went by the name of Able, not sure when or where he picked up this nickname. According to the 1860 census there was an Abel Scronce living in Catawba Co., alone at the age of 19. At the age of 20 Abel, a Farmer from Lincoln Co., enlisted in the 23rd Regiment NC Infantry Co. B on March 15th 1862. He was present and accounted for until wounded in the left side near Richmond Va abt. 1862. He returned to duty on an unspecified date subsequent to November 30, 1862. He was then present and accounted for until he was captured at Winchester VA during The Battle of Rutherford's Farm on July 20 1864. He then spent abt 8mo.s at Camp Chase Prison, in Ohio. He was paroled and transferred to Boulware's and Cox's Wharves, James River, VA where he was received abt March 10-12, 1865 for exchange. Abt 4 mo.s after his release he married Sarah Abernethy.
