"Abigail Swain, Ancestor to Samuel Willetts"

Added by tookeep on 17 Oct 2007

Richard Swain and wife had a daughter, Abigail Swain. Abigail was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts. She was about two years old when her family resettled from Nantucket to Cape Mey (May), New Jersey. Abigail Swain married John Buck and in 1712 they had a daughter, Mary Buck.

Mary Buck married Hope Willetts (Willits) whose parents, it appears, emigrated from England to Cape May. From Cape May, Hope and Mary Buck Willetts relocated to Lockwoods Folly or the Town Creek area of Brunswick County, North Carolina, sometime during the 1730s. Abigail's brother, Jonathan Swain, relocated to the same area in 1731 and they may have journeyed together.

These small settlements of Lockwood's Folly and Town Creek were located a few miles by river near Old Brunswick Town, an important, growing port city at that time, located on the banks of the Cape Fear River. All goods for the lower Cape Fear valley, south of Wilmington (not yet established), were imported or exported to and from this port prior to the 1776 American Revolution. Mary Buck Willetts died in Brunswick County in 1748. Hope Willetts died there in 1767. Their son, Samuel Willetts, born in 1732, died in Brunswick County in 1782. Samuel was my great, great, great, great grandfather. See the story of William W. Willetts and his five Confederate sons ...
