About Abigail Ripley

Abigail Wheelock was the daughter of Reverend Doctor Eleazar Wheelock (Yale College, 1733, University of Edinburgh, 1767) and his second wife, Mary (Brinsmade) Wheelock. Her father was the founder and first president of Dartmouth College (previously Moor's Indian Charity School of Columbia, Connecticut).

She married the Reverend Sylvanus Ripley (Dartmouth College, 1771) one of four students who made up the first graduating class of Dartmouth College. He became professor of theology there and remained until his death in 1787.

One of their children was Brigadier General Eleazar Wheelock Ripley (Dartmouth College, 1800) a soldier of the War of 1812 who was decorated by Congress and, in later life, became a member of Congress representing the State of Louisiana.
