About Abigail Stone

Abigail Dixey was baptized on 25 December 1636 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.4,5 She was the daughter of Captain William Dixey and Ann or Hannah (—?—) (Dixey).2,3

She married John Stone, son of John Stone, circa 1652.1 She died between 1691 and 1703.1            Abigail and John Stone lived in Beverly where he kept an inn from 1673 to 1682. He is called a seaman in 1677, and it is probable that the business of the inn was the principal care of his wife. It is recorded that a rally of the militia, under Capt. Dixey, took place at the Stone inn at eight o'clock on the morning of 14 January 1676.6

Age was estimated as 43 in 1678 and about 40 in 1679, in legal cases in which she testified, from the evidence in which we learn that she employed two maids, Sarah Riggs, and Mary Barrett, and that included in her finery were "a great handkerchief with spots in it, a lace cap with running strings, and a long neck-cloth laced at both ends."7

Abigail Stone was mentioned in her father Captain William Dixey's will dated 21 February 1684/85. She shared equally in the land with her four sisters, Mary Woodbury, Anna Judkin, Elizabeth Morgan and Sarah Gale. The household goods were divided between her, Elizabeth and Sarah. Also, she and Sarah each inherited a cow.8
