Will of Abner Bassett, dated 24 July 1822

To me beloved wife Susannah Bassett I leave all of the estate I may die possessed of both real and personal during her widowhood. Recommending to her at any time she may have anything to spare from the increase of my said estate to call on my executors herein after named who will have the said surplus of property valued and delivered so as to ........ and equal distribution among our children herein after named and as soon as convenient after the marriage or death of my whife Susannah Bassett, it is my will and desire that all my estate both real and personal with its increase shall be divided between my following children. As follows to Wit: To my son Nathaniel Bassett I give and bequeth one share, to my grandchildren the children of my son Abner I give one share, I give one share to my son William Bassett, I give one share to my son Burwell. To my grandchildren the children of my Daughter Polly Myers I give the and bequeth one share, to my daughter Betsey I give one share, to my daughter Nancy I give one share. To my son Thomas I give one share, to my daughter Eliza I give one share and $100.00 dollars. To my daughter Susannah I give one share, to my daughter Sally I give one share, to my daughter Aganes I give one share. To them and their heirs forever and lastly I constitute and apppoint my first son named Nathaniel Bassett and my son Willliam Bassett and my friend John Pinkston and James W. Johnson executor to this my last will and testament _______All other, given under my hand this 24th day of July, 1822.

At a County Court___ and held for the County of Davies at the court house in Owensborough on Moonday the 5th day of August in 1822, the within writing porporting to be the last will and testament of Abner Bassett deceased was produced in court and there upon Joseph Thompson and F. Thompson subscribing witnesses there to come into court and made oath that the said Abner Bassett in their presence acknowledged and delivered this said writing as and for his last will and testament, that they believed he was in his senses and memory and that they subscribed their names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the testator and at this request and there upon the same was ordered to be recorded and leave was granted the executors theirn named to qualify at the next term_____ at a county court began and held for the county aforesaid at the court house aforesaid on the 4th day of November 1822 the executors named in the said will having failed to appear and qualify, Nestery Clay, was appointed administrator with the will annexed of the said testator estate, he having taken in open court the oath and executed bond agreeably by law and upon the said wil is duly recorded in my office.

Know all men by these present that we Abner Bassett and John Bassett hold and firmly bound unto James Garrard Esq. Govenor of Kentucky this sum of fifty pounds current money this payment will and truly to be made. We bind ourselves our heirs and jointly and for ever, firmly by these present sealed and dated this 4th day of March 1800. The condition of the above obligation is such that wereas there is a marriage inteneded between Abner Bassett and Susannah Harbard. For which a license has been issued. Now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct. S/O marriage, where in the above obligation to be __________ __________ to remain in full force.

Abner Bassett Sr was the husband of Susannah Harbard Bassett. It is not known where they are buried, though Bassett family history suggests they may be buried near other family members in the Yelvington Cemetery in Daviess County, Kentucky. Abner Bassett's estate was settled with an inventory in 1823, Recorded in Book A, Page 186, Daviess County Court Records.
