About Abraham Saul "Sol" Horowitz
Sol Horowitz was my grandmother Annie Friedel's brother.
Abraham Saul Horowitz's death certificate, filed in Maryland in 1974, indicated that he was born to Samuel Horowitz and Rebecca in August 1884 in Lithuania, and this is the year on his tombstone.
He was actually born a few years earlier. "SHOUL ABRAM GURVITZ" was age 1 and living in the town of Joniskelis in the Kovno Gubernia with his parents Shmuel Leyzer Gurvich and Rivka Gurvich on an 1883 Lithuania Family List. A similar Family List from 1887 indicated that he was age 5.
ABRAHAM HURVITZ was listed as age 8 as an alien passenger on the SS Rhein in 1889 crossing from Bremen to Baltimore with his mother Rivke and younger sister. "Lei." . As ABRAHAM S. HURWITZ on the 1900 US Census, he was age 17, born in August 1882, occupation watchmaker, living with his parents and sister Annie on Forrest Street in East Baltimore.
SOL HOROWITZ was best man at his sister Annie's wedding, according to the Baltimore Sun's 1905 write-up. Also, the 1928 obituary of his father Rabbi Samuel Horowitz indicated that one of his survivors was his son Sol Horowitz, (of Charleston, S.C). Pretty much every other record I found indicated Abraham Sol or Abraham Saul. I've recently made contact with Laine Horowitz, his great-granddaughter, who confirmed that he was called Sol and that the Horowitz family came from Lithuania. She provided me with the Russian version of the name, Gurvich, which opened the doors to discovering the family's roots in Joniskelis.
He married Fannie Jacobson in Portsmouth, Virginia on January 15, 1907. She was born in Baltimore. Their first two children were born in Portsmouth: Ruth in Nov, 1907 and Meyer in 1909. In April 1910, at the time of the census, he and Fannie were living at 66 Mariner St. in Norfolk, Virginia, and his occupation was watchmaker. Their third child Irving was born in South Carolina in 1912. Vernon (George Vernon), the youngest, was born in Charleston, SC in 1914
"A. Saul Horowitz" was listed as a jeweler at 351 King St. in Charleston, SC in the city directories in 1917 through 1922, and this was also his residence.
Abraham and Fannie divorced at some point and she remarried, to Max Barney.
Abraham is buried in Mikro Kodesh Cemetery in Baltimore in Section 3, Row 2, Lot 5, next to his parents Samuel and Rebecca, who are in Lots 6 and 7.
