About Abraham Isaac Shiplacoff

Born in Province of Chernigov, Russia, December 25, 1877. Socialist. Labor union official; member of New York state assembly from Kings County 23rd District, 1916-18; defeated, 1922; delegate to Socialist National Convention from New York, 1920; candidate for U.S. Representative from New York, 1926 (10th District), 1928 (10th District), 1930 (10th District), 1932 (9th District). Prosecuted with John Reed for Sedition for a speech he made, http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F70712F93E5511738..., which was ultimately dismissed.

Died, of an infection secondary to kidney stones, in Brooklyn, Kings County, N.Y., February, 1936 (age 58 years, 0 days). Interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Glendale, Queens, N.Y.

Shiplacoff was born in Russia in 1877 and came to the United States in 1891. In 1914, he became secretary-treasurer of the United Hebrew Trades. Politically active in the Socialist Party, he was the first elected Socialist Assemblyman from New York City in 1915 (serving three terms) and led the Socialist delegation in the Legislature opposing intervention in World War I. He was also involved with the International Pocketbook Workers Union, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, the Socialist Party and the National Labor Committee for Palestine. The collection includes materials pertaining to these affiliations, including: correspondence with Samuel Gompers that documents the conflict between the American Federation of Labor and the United Hebrew Trades.
