"Killis" enlisted as a private in Company H of the 21st regiment of the Confederate Army at the age of 19 with his younger brother Lewis J. Key who was 17. Killis was wounded in the back at Winchester, VA on May 25, 1862 and soon thereafter went AWOL with his brother. Six months after his desertion, Archilas married his first wife, Ellen Whitaker. The next public record found for A.S. Key is his marriage to Mary Grubb in Jasper County, Indiana in 1868. In 1870, the family has already moved to Peoria County, Illinois where A.S. is a farmer near Radnor with only personal property valued at $300. Mary (Grubb) Key has parents, brothers, and sisters living in Jasper County, IN and later Peoria County, IL, and still later in Taylor County, Iowa. It is hard to know who was the instigator of the family's move West - A.S. and Mary or others. By 1880, the family is in Grove Township, Taylor County, Iowa. In the 1923 Taylor County Atlas, A.S. owns 40 acres of land in Section 35 and reported living in the county 38 years.
What is the proper spelling for A.S. Key's first and middle name? In her book on the Key family history, Irene Padgett presents his name as Achillus Sherdrick KEY. His death certificate, with information provided by 3rd wife Sarah, reads Achelus S. Key. His middle name came from his maternal grandfather Shadrach Boaz and his first name from his paternal grandfather, Achillis Key.
