About Ada Marinescu (Grunberg)

Ada was the daughter of Moise Grunberg and Blima/Beti nee Iosupovici. There was no civil marriage for the couple and that is the reason she was registered under her mother's maiden name. There are many instances where a child was legitimized once the parents went thru a civil marriage. Apparently in this case, the parents did not and that explains the unusual adoption. The reason for lack of civil marriage most likely due to the requirement of Romanian Civil Code to obtain a special dispensation - from the King -- to allow marriages for blood relatives (LR 04 2022)

Although it was always known by the immediate family that Ada was the biological daughter of Betty and Moise (Moses) Grunberg, in February 2015, a big surprise revealed itself to me (Andrea Bernard), as I obtained her birth certificate from Moinesti Vital Records of the Bacau Archives. Ada was born to a woman named Blima Iosupovici, age 36, at the home of Betty and Moise Grunberg. The relationship of Blima to the Grunberg couple is a mystery, as she had never been mentioned by Ada's sister, Aurora (my grandmother), who held honesty in high esteem; so she must not have been told by her parents nor by Ada (who at some point in her life must have seen her own birth certificate and found out the truth) that Ada had been adopted. Aurora would tell the story that her stepfather Moise always treated her with the same love and kindness shown to his biological daughter Ada. So Aurora apparently never knew of Ada's adoption by Betty and Moise. The name of Ada's biological father is not listed on her birth certificate. Ada and Aurora were very close and loved one another tremendously. Aurora was devastated when Ada was executed in 1941.
Addendum by Andrea B. (April 2022): During a Zoom conference call Febr. 2022 with newly found Greenberg relatives, Suzanne Lorenz, Morris Greenberg's granddaughter, reported that her father, Edwin Greeneberg, had heard from Morris that the family name was originally Iosupovici and later changed to Greenberg. I suspect that Ada, born in Moise's home) was Moise's biological daughter after all. Due to intrafamilial marriage being illegal at that time, Betty (Blima) reported Ada as hers under the old family name and had Ada adopted by her husband/uncle Moise to get around the law. To date, no marriage certificate has been discovered for Betty and Moise.

Ada Marinescu was a Communist revolutionary, shot during World War II after being imprisoned.

She had been buried, together with other Communist revolutionary fighters, in a memorial site in Park Carol, Bucharest, Romania, although apparently their bodies were exhumed and moved to an unknown location some time after the 1989 Revolution.

She is a national Romanian heroine, and many streets and institutions are named after her. She belonged to the Communist group "Panet," named after the Jewish chemical engineer Francisc Panet. The group illegally produced explosives to be used against the German troops stationed in Romania during World War II.

Five members of the group were caught and sentenced to death on November 5, 1941. Two days later, they were tied to trees in a forest near the Jilava Prison and shot. Four of the members of the group were Jewish: Francisc Panet and his wife Lily, Ada Marinescu, and Dr. Adalbert Kornhauser. The fifth member, Elizabeta Nagy, was of Hungarian origin, a fact mentioned in the press of the time (Ziarul "Viata," anul 1, nr. 223, 11 Noembrie 1941, pagina 6).

Marinescu is a surname that Ada adopted when she fought the government who later executed her and her life partner Kornhauser (It is possible that his name was Kornfelder - according to an online article).
