About Adam Hatton

Adam Hatton (b. 1731, d. 09 Feb 1831)

Adam Hatton105 was born 1731 in Fayette Co, PA/VA, and died 09 Feb 1831 in Estill Co, Ky. He married Sarah Smith on 1774 in PA, daughter of John Smith.

Notes for Adam Hatton:

We have not been able to find his parents, but it is possible he descends from either William or John. William was transported into Westmoreland Co in 1654 and John in 1638 Upper Norfolk Co. We know that his wife was Sarah and there is circumstantial evidence that she was the daughter of John Smith. His birth place is also questionable. Was it VA or PA. In 1731 PA was not a state but, he can be placed there as an adult. More than likely he was born in VA and traveled to what would become PA. No records can be found for a pension nor land grant, yet he arrived in KY before 1800. Since he enlisted in Upper Norfolk this make John a good candidate to be a grandfather. As you will see from his service record, he served under Isaac Beall. This family marries into the HOWARD, DENT and other families of MD. Adam's son, Ephraim married Susannah HOWARD and they are my 3rd great grandparents. The Westmoreland connection also has merit. Henry HOWARD m. Isabella GRIFFITH/IN (who also lived over 100 years). They were from Westmoreland Co. Henry is son of Ignatius HOWARD and Sarah SIMS.

The following is the documentation I have to date on Adam:

Adam Hatton from Upper Norfolk, Virginia born 1730-1731. Revolutionary War Veteran. Assisted in the establishment of American Independence during the Revolution.

Adam assisted in surveying the Mason and Dixon Line between Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Adam was married to Sarah Smith, daughter of John Smith, Revolutionary War Soldier.

Adam died Wednesday February 9, 1831. Lewis Hatton talked often of his great grandfather Adam. Said he lived more than 100 years and on the day he was 100 years old he split 100 rails and killed a deer.

Biographical Dictionary and Historical Reference Book of Fayette Co, PA. Pioneer Settlers, 1752-1772. He is listed in Fayette in 1764 The families were asked to leave in 1764 because of the French/Indian Wars. In 1768 Adam is listed in Redstone, PA.

In "The Ten Mile Country and Its Pioneer Families" Fayette, Washington and Greene Co, Pa and Ohio and Monongalia Co Va.(Petition for a new State) Adam Hatton is listed. As is a Thomas Gist , Joseph Howard, John Hanks, Nathan Griffith, Grabills, Walter and William Briscoe, Downards, George Farber, Powell, Quisinberry, Taylor and many other names that will appear in NC and KY in the early 1800's.

Early Settlers, Petition for a New State: Fayette Co, PA has an Adam Hatton listed. Also in Nelson's Biographical Dictionary and Historical Reference Book of Fayette Co, PA. Pioneer Settlers, 1752-1772.

Enlisted Thursday, September 18, 1777. Served in Captain Thomas Ridley's Co. of the 4th Virginia Reg't of Foot, commanded by Col. Robert Lawson, September and October of 1777.

Adam was at Valley Forge 1778, Camp Middlebrook 1779, winter headquarters of Gen. George Washington. Present at the surrender of Charles Cornwallis Friday, October 19, 1781.  The bitter winter endured here by Washington's ragged, hungry troops saw the emergence of a real American Army, risen from the battered and dispirited force which staggered into the camp on December 19, 1777. The military training and discipline imposed by General von Steuben at Valley Forge created a force which from that time on would meet its professional enemy on equal terms and at last defeat him.

Adam Hatton assisted in the establishment of American Independence during the Revolution. (Perhaps he one of the men in the boat with Gen. Washington in the famous painting).

Muster Roll at Valley Forge

Adam Hatten is listed on Tax Rolls 1782-1787 in Fayette Co, VA. He is the only one listed in this county. Fayette Co, VA became Fayette Co, KY in 1792. Kentucky Co, Virginia was formed in 1772 from 14 other Virginia Counties. Then in 1780 Kentucky Co. Virginia became extinct and 3 other Counties were formed; Lincoln Co. Virginia, Jefferson Co, Virginia, and Fayette Co. Virginia. These 3 counties were then divided as followed; Lincoln Co. into Mercer Co. VA and Madison Co. VA; Jefferson Co. into Nelson Co. VA; Fayette Co. into Bourbon Co. VA, Mason Co. VA and Woodford Co. VA.

1810 Estill Co Census :

  • 3 M < 10 grandchildren ?
  • 2 M 16-26 = Benjamin & Wm J.
  • 2 F 16-26 =
  • 1 M & F over 45 = Adam & Sarah

Ephraim & Susannah had 4 children by 1810 so do not think he is the other male 16-26. Casey & Molly both married in 1805 so if they are the 2 daughter, then the males are probably their husbands, or they are the wives of sons. Ben & Isabella were m. in 1809 and have 2 sons. Note that they were charged with forication in 1808 which explains the child b. in 1805. William m. Patience in June 1810.

There is also a William Hatton

  • 1 M < 10
  • 1 M 16-26
  • 1F < 10
  • 1 F 16-26 (Wife)
  • 1 F 26-46 Mother?
  • 1 F 45 + Mother?

This can not be William's family as he appears to be living with Adam, but he was 20 and could have been married with 2 small children.. Is this possibly a brother's family and the grandmother and mother are in the HH? The Wm m. to Tabathia in 1850 would have been 38 in 1810, so that eliminates them.

1820 Clark Co, KY (Page 86)

  • 2 M < 10 _____,_____
  • M 10-16
  • Male 16-18
  • Male 16--26
  • Male 45+ Adam
  • Female 16-26
  • Female 26-45
  • Female 45+ Sarah

The other Hattin/Hatten/Hatton listed are: Ben & William 26-45 (pg 62), William 26-45 & Thomas 16-26 (pg 94), John (pg 88), Thomas 16-26 (pg 79). The John HH has a male 45+and also male & female 26-45.

In 1830 Adam is 90-100 (he would be 99 years old).

  • There are 2 M < 5,
  • 2 M 5-10.
  • F 10-15,
  • F 20-30
  • F 30-40

This would indicate that he has 2 daughters or daughter-in-laws in the HH with children.
