Biography

It appears that he took over the family name of his mother's brother, although this seems to be somewhat uncertain. The normal proposal is that Adam is the son of William of "Waddon" (Whatton, Nottinghamshire), who claimed the inheritance of his brother-in-law William de Neufmarché (Novo Mercato, Novo Foro).

Adam de Neufmarche

ADAM de Neufmarché, son of [WILLIAM de Waddon & his wife --- de Neufmarché] (-[1160/61]). The Complete Peerage suggests that Adam de Neufmarché was the same person as the unnamed son of William de Waddon who was recorded in 1130 as succeeding his [maternal] uncle[1753]. “Ada de Novoforo…” witnessed the undated charter which records that “Richardus de Builli…Ricardo filio Turgis” founded Roche abbey in Yorkshire[1754]. Pope Urban III confirmed donations to Roche abbey, Yorkshire, including the donation by “Adæ de Novo-foro”, dated 1186[1755]. m ---. The name of Adam’s wife is not known.

Adam & his wife had [two] children:

• 1. HENRY de Neufmarché (-summer 1178). Domesday Descendants names Henry as son of Adam de Neufmarché, but cites no corresponding primary source[1756]. The 1164/65 Pipe Roll records "Wills de Nouomcato" payiing a fine for "custodia terre nepotis sui" in Yorkshire[1757]. The "nepotis" is not named, but could be Henry de Neufmarché, son of Adam, who was probably still a minor at that date. m ([1170/75]%29 as her first husband, DENISE de Tilly, daughter of OTES de Tilly & his wife Mabel FitzRaven (-after 1211). Her parentage and first marriage are confirmed by a claim dated 1225, noted by Bracton, by her son "Adam de Novo Mercato" against "Willelmum comitem Warenne et priorem de Lewes" for "ecclesiam de Hethfeldia…advocacionem", the defendant claiming that "Mabilie de Tylle…avia ipsius Ade" gave the advocacy to him, while the plaintiff claimed that "Mabilia…[et] Odonis de Tylli viri sui" gave "manerium de Hethfeldia" to "Henrico de Novo Mercato patri suo in maritagium cum filia eorum", and recording that "Willelmus filius Raneue antecessor predicti Ade" had "filiam Mabiliam predictam" who had "filiam Dionisiam…mater Ade" and that "Willelmus…avus Dionisie" gave the land "in maritagium cum ipsa Mabilia Odoni viri suo" who gave it on the marriage of their daughter Denise[1758]. The Complete Peerage records that "her great-grandson Adam describes her in 1271-2 as aunt and heir of Margery, daughter and heiress of her brother Otes de Tilli"[1759]. She married secondly (1182) Henri du Puiset. “Henricus de Putheaco” donated property to Sawley abbey, for the soul of “Adelidis de Perci matris meæ et Dionisiæ sponsæ meæ…Willielmi de Perci”, by undated charter[1760]. Henry & his wife had two children:

Adam de Newmarch, son of William de Whatton, took his mother’s family ‘surname’ and inherited land from his uncle William de Newmarch. Adam died in 1161. He also had a brother called William de Newmarch and other brothers Robert and Walter de Whatton.
