On July 1, 1937, Addie Mae Shelby sent a letter to David & Caroline Shelby, while visiting others in Bloomfield, Iowa. She talks about heavy rains making the roads so muddy that drivers had to put chains on their tires to get around. She talked about the poor quality of Iowa fruit "I wish they could have some of the fruit that goes to waste in Washington. I sure would not want to live in Iowa again. Two days it was over 100 in the shade."

In August, 1941, she was living with her daughter Jessie who wrote in a letter to Caroline A. (Paul) Shelby that Addie Mae was sleeping most of the time, but did not appear to be in any pain; she died 6 months later.
