Alisdair Dewar (1897-1973)
Alisdair Dewar was born and qualified in Glasgow. His first career was in general practice but he was also appointed to a part-time consultant post in dermatology at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. With the advent of the National Health Service in 1948, and despite chronic ill health, he devoted himself entirely to the specialty. He is perhaps most notable as the father of Donald Dewar, pioneer of devolution and the first First Minister of the revived Scottish Parliament.
