About Albert Andrew

ACCIDENT NO. 25 - March 9, 1910 – Wm. J. Jilbert and Daniel Harrington, South Hecla Branch, C.&H.

The following testimony was taken at an inquest held over the bodies of Wm. J. Jilbert and Daniel Harrington, both of whom were killed on this date. Albert Andrew, who was injured at this same time and by the same cause, died in the hospital on March 22nd.

Peter Matkovitch: “I work for the C.&H. company at No. 8 shaft, South Hecla, at the 54th level. I knew the men who were killed. I was working in the same timber gang and was present at the time of the accident, about 10 minutes after 12 today. As soon as the skip went down we started to pinch down some loose rock. I was on the north side of the shaft. The three, Jilbert, Harrington and Andrew, were standing together. Andrew had the bar and Jilbert told him to pinch down a small piece of loose rock, as soon as he did so, the big rock fell, killing Jilbert and Harrington instantly. Andrew was injured and taken to the hospital. The rock they pinched out was not the one that killed them. It was a large one behind that."

Above testimony corroborated by John Notari.

W. J. Trevathen: “I was at the 28th level, they were at the 54th. I went down after the accident and helped get them out. Jilbert was a very careful man, one of the most careful man underground. From the looks of the rock I should not have been afraid to stand under. It looks as though the small rock they pinched down formed a key and as soon as that was taken out it let down the big rock under which they were standing."

Verdict: "That the said Wm. J. Jilbert and Daniel Harrington came to their deaths on the 9th day of March, 1910, on the South side of No. 8 shaft, 54th level, South Hecla Branch of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, death being due to accidental fall of ground."

Albert Andrew who was injured at the same time, died on March 22, 1910.
