Frieda Steilberger had one brother Albert who was about 10 years older than her. He married a non-Jewish woman and was ostracized by the family. There where 2 children of that marriage Heda and Alex. I think you know about them. Heida came to

S.A. a long time ago. I have a vague memory of her. She has or had one crippled arm. Yvonne may know more about them. I think she was in contact at one stage and got the brush off. ®23 5/27/02.

I'd like to send you the first part of what Albert Steilberger has written down.

This first chapter falls into three parts. First he tells about a visit at Abraham Steilberger's home in Elberfeld and- from my point of view-he gives a fantastic description of how he experienced his great-grandmother Sibilla Jonas

Steilberger.

The second part deals with Samuel and Friederike Steilberger and Albert possibly shows the reason for the family to go to Elberfeld as Friederike who seems to have been an ambitious person started herown business there.

Albert concludes the first chapter telling how his father Jakob found his way to start a career - which at a time where the traditional "self employed worker" had no chance against the "machine dominated factory" was not very easy, especially

as the"boom" after the foundation of the 2nd Reich came to an end and many people lost their money. A situation of economic depression followed. Maybe "the" situation for your grandfather to leave the country?
