He was the sixth son of the ten children of Duke William v of Bavaria (vi) and his wife Princess Renata of Lorraine (1544−1602), daughter of Duke Francis I and the Danish Princess Christina.

As his brother Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria remained long childless, it looked to the birth of Ferdinand Maria's then, that one of the children of Albert would inherit the Duchy of Bavaria. By marrying the Princess of Mechthildis, Albert 1646 came into the possession of the Landgraviate of Leuchtenberg, after the line of the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg in the male line was extinguished. He described however as Duke of Leuchtenberg, rather than as Landgrave. In the year 1650 he exchanged a the Hague Imperial County for Leuchtenberg elector Maximilian I by his brother. His nephew Maximilian Philipp Hieronymus received Leuchtenberg.
