Owing to religious persecutions, moved to Ireland in 1725 with his wife and three children. He and Andrew found work there but living conditions were more difficult than Scotland. A cousin had gone to America and sent world that America was the land of opportunity. At that time, they did not have enough money for the voyage, but worked until 1736 when it was possible to take the journey. Made the journey with his wife, 3 sons, 2 daughters, and younger brother Andrew.
