ALEXANDER MCMILLAN, PIONEER, ANSWERED FINAL SUMMONS MONDAY - (found in "The Advocate and Democrat," Marysville, Marshall County, Kansas)  
     In the death  of Alexander McMillan, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. C. Calhoon, in this city on Monday morning at two o'clock, at the age of ninety-one years, five months and ten days, Marshall County loses one of it's oldest and most highly respected citizens. He was ill but four days. Death resulted from heart failure following a chill which he contracted on the previous Wednesday.
    The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, short services being conducted at the home by Lyon Corps No. 206 and the cortege  thence proceeding to the Methodist church where the sermon was delivered by the pastor, Rev. A. L. Tainter. Interment was in the Marysville cemetery, the services at the grave being in charge of Lyon Post of which the deceased was a member.
    Alexander McMillan was born in Franklin county New York, September 28, 1821. He made his home in his native state until 1838 when he moved to Kane county, Illinois, where on September 9, 1845 he was united in marriage to Miss Charlotte Hinsdell. To this union were born three daughters, Sophrona E., Lavina J. and Sophia C., the former of whom, now Mrs. N.C. Calhoon, survives him. 
    In September 1861 he enlisted in Co. I 8th Illinois cavalry and was then called home by the serious illness of hi wife who passed away on April 10, 1863. He received his honorable discharge from the army service on account of failing eyesight in February 1863. He was united in marriage a second time on October 13, 1864 to Miss Anna VanValkenburg, the ceremony taking place at Sycamore, Illinois. Three children were born to this marriage, Burton Alexander, Grace E. and Cora B., the latter alone, now Mrs. Albert R. Homann of Oklahoma City, Okla., survives. Mrs. McMillan preceded her husband in death in this city on August 2, 1898.
    The deceased came to Kansas in April 1877 and located on a farm six miles west og the city. For the past nine years he had made his home with his daughter.
    Besides his two daughters he is survived by two sisters, Mr. A. E. Barnes of Altai, Nebraska, and Mrs. Thaddeus Ruker of Osage, Iowa; twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren.
