Notes:

1 - In 1606 Mark Kerr, Lord Newbattle was created Earl of Lothian, and in 1620 his son Robert Kerr 2nd Earl of Lothian had a Charter of novodamus which incorporated the lands and barony of Prestongrange into the lordship of Newbattle, with a further charter incorporating other lands into the lordship in 1621. He then in 1622 disponed the lands and Barony of Prestongrange, under reversion, to Alexander Morison, Advocate, who had a Charter pass the Great Seal with the lands and Barony of Newbattle in Special Warrandice, the Earl having made provision for his countess, whose marriage contract had been secured on Prestongrange. Alexander Morison had this in security for 40,000 merks advanced under a contract dated 24 December 1622, registered in the Books of Council and Session 23 July 1623.

Robert 2nd Earl of Lothian renounced the reversion 1 August 1623 (Alexander Morison obtained a Decreet of Declarator that the right of reversion was void 29 November 1628), and Alexander Morison had a Charter of novodamus pass the Great Seal 29 August 1622 of terras et baroniam de Prestoungrange ... incorporated de novo into the liberam baroniam de Prestoungrange, with the lands and barony of Newbattle (likewise incorporated de novo) in special warrandice. This Charter of novodamus in favour of Alexander Morison, Advocate, is for present purposes the root of title of the Barony of Prestongrange. 2 - 4th Baron of Prestongrange: Alexander Morrison, acquired from 2nd Earl of Lothian on 11 June 1622, created Lord Prestoungrange 1626, died 1631 (http://www.prestoungrange.org/prestonpans/html/generations.html)

2 - Located immediately to the south of Prestonpans in East Lothian, is Bankton House, separated from the town by the railway. This 17th Century mansion takes the form of a central block with two pavilions, lying to the east and west, all decorated in distinctive orange lime harling. The western pavilion once incorporated a doo'cot and now contains a small exhibition recording the history and restoration of the house. The original building was erected in the late 12th century and was associated with the monks of Newbattle Abbey, who had been granted charters to much of the surrounding area and became known as Holy Stop (later Oliestob). The property passed through the hands of Mark Ker, Earl of Lothian (1553 - 1609), Sir Alexander Morison of Prestongrange (who purchased it in 1632) and the Setons of Winton and, through marriage, to the Hamilton family. It was also occupied by lawyer Sir Hew Dalrymple (1690 - 1755) for a time. Around 1742, the house and estate was sold to the celebrated Col. James Gardiner (1687 - 1745), who died nearby at the Battle of Prestonpans. Thereafter the house was bought by an Edinburgh advocate, Andrew McDouall (1685 - 1760), who took the title Lord Bankton when he was promoted to the bench. This name then became attached to the house.
