About Alexander Marshall (Sandy) Paterson
Alexander, or Sandy the nickname by which he was alway known, Paterson was a solidly built Otago forward who played in the back or side rows of the old 2-3-2 scrum. He was a typical Otago product, hard working, a fine dribbler and adept in getting to the loose ball and freeing it, or rucking as it became known soon after.
Paterson had a long career which stretched from 1908, when he was aged 22, until 1921 when he was 35. Interrupting his career, of course, was World War I and Paterson had the notable experience of playing in major events on either side of that event.
In his first season, in 1908, he not only became an All Black, playing in the second and third tests against the Anglo Welsh tourists, but also played for Otago against that side. His part in Otago's 9-6 win undoubtedly won him his All Black place. In 1908 he was in the Otago side, too, which made the then long trip to Auckland to challenge in vain for the Ranfurly Shield.
Then in 1920-21 Paterson reappeared in shield rugby, playing in the Otago sides which that year had unsuccessful challenges against Wellington. In 1921 he was also in the Otago side which lost to the Springboks.
Paterson's second stint with the All Blacks came in 1910 when he toured Australia. He made seven appearances including all three tests and scored a try in the 28-13 third test win and another in the match against New South Wales.
Between 1908 and 1911 Paterston made four consecutive appearances for the South Island. With 43 games for Otago in all Paterson had a grand tally in first class rugby spread over 14 seasons of just 56 matches.
