Alfred E. Beckwith was the sixth of seven sons born to John Beckwith and Rebecca Barnaby. Alfred was born and raised near Upper Dyke Nova Scotia, Canada. He and five of his brothers moved West settling in Victoria British Columbia, Montana and Portland, Oregon. Alfred moved to Portland in about 1883 to join two of his brothers already there. Alfred worked for the Portland Fire Department and he along with his brother Herbert became engaged in the grocery business in Portland, Oregon. Alfred owned a business known as A. E. Beckwith Fine Groceries and Provisions, located at 295 4TH Street corner of Columbia in Portland, Oregon. Alfred married Florence Morton on 4 October 1887 in Portland, Oregon. Alfred and Florence together had two Children; Alfred Jr born 18 Sep 1888 and Estella born 6 Dec 1891. Alfred liked to vacation with his family at Ocean Beach, Washington, and it was there that Albert E, Beckwith died on 16 August 1893. Alfred had cut himself on the nose from a sea shell. The wound festered and overnight it turned to blood poisoning, he died suddenly. He was buried at River View Cemetery in Portland, Oregon
His wife later married Elmer E. Kleinsmith on 19 Feb 1895.
