Alfred Gideon Otis

Alfred and Amelia Harres Otis were the maternal grandparents of the famed aviator, Amelia Earhart. Amelia was born in their home on July 24, 1897. Alfred was married on April 22, 1862. He was a judge. Their home is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. It's a woodframe, Gothic Revival cottage built in 1861, with a rear brick Italianate addition finished in 1873. After both granparents passed away in 1912, three other families occupied the home until 1984. At that time, an Atchison physician Dr. Eugene Bribach, made a gift of the home to The Ninety-Nines, Inc., International Organization of Women Pilots. Amelia was a charter member and first president of The Ninety-Nines. See the 'International Forest of Friendship Memorial' in Atchison, Ks, its a dedication to the World of Aviation and Aerospace. It includes immortalized gravestones.
