About Alfred Clarence Small
Alfred Clarence Small was born in 1860, the seventh child born to Thomas and Mary Small (nee Hughes) and married Alice Maud Allen in 1881. The couple lived at Calliope near Ulmarra on the Clarence River in an attractive weatherboard house with extensive verandahs. The grounds were enhanced with trees and shrubs and there was a colourful rose garden. The home was almost completely surrounded by a hedge. Their means of transport was a horse and sulky, also a buggy (hooded) and pair. Alfred engaged in dairy farming and was an inspector of dairies for the Clarence River Pioneer Dairy Company - Ulmarra Area. Alfred also bred thoroughbred horses for racing, which were raced on an adjoining property, portion of which served as the local racecourse. The couple boarded the local schoolmistress from the Calliope Public School and Alfred donated Small's Park which is now the Ulmarra Showground.
