About Alfred Leo Whitfield
Alfred ran a pont across the Vaal River near Klerksdorp before the bridge was built and made his fortune which he invested in a farm called Matjespan in 1896 situate in the Viljoenskroon district. He fought on both sides of the Boer war, starting as a burgher of the Free State, but upon returning from a commando one day discovered that his home had been burnt down as he was English speaking. His family had taken refuge with the British garrison in Kroonstad. He was shot and killed near the end of the war by a sniper - who legend has it was a family friend from before the war.
