In the 1880s and 1890s, A. H. Wyatt was the pioneer storekeeper in Seaview Road, New Brighton. He had a reputation as a philanderer. The story goes that, while his wife was away giving birth, he seduced the maid, a young woman called Nankivell from South Brighton. Until his teenage years, the child of this relationship was not told the name of his father.
