About Alfredo Deetjen Merecette

Alfredo Deetjen Merecette was born in 1826 in Cap-Haitien, Haiti or Dajabón, Domican Republic and died from Dec 1895 to 1897 in Cap-Haitien at age 69.

General Notes: Lived in the Eastern Part of the Island which at the time was under control of the Haitien government, now know as the Dominican Republic and worked with his brother at first, then became a politician. He fought for the independence from Spain and from Haiti.

Judge at the Tribunal of Commerce in Santiago, DR.

"When working in genealogy in the Dominican Republic, there are provinces each having a capital or provincial seat: Santiago de los Caballeros is the seat (or capitol) of Santiago etc. Also those born before 1844, are not born in the Dominican Republic but on the Island of Santo Domingo. During 1822 and 1844 Haiti ruled the whole island. During that time many Haitians took residency in the east part of the island such as: Heureaux, Charpentier, Deetjen.... so that Alfredo Deetjen Merecette was born in Dajabón, Island of Santo Domingo and not in the Dominican Republic. It was in 1844 with the leadership of Alfredo Deetjen Merecette that the eastern part of the island became independent - free from the Haitian domination and free from Spain." - Louise Gilg
