About Alice May Adams

Alice May (Adams) Lavis, 93, died of natural causes on July 20, 2016, after a long and adventurous life. Born in Albany, Oregon, she lived in Sierra Vista and Tucson since 1987, after retiring from her administrative support position with the California State Board of Education in Sacramento. She traveled widely and lived throughout the United States with her Marine Corps husband and four children. At age 19, at the beginning of World War II, she took the train across the country, to join the war effort as a “Government Girl” and met her husband United States Marine George Audene Lavis of Minnesota. She, herself, joined the USMC when she turned 21 and served three years of active duty. Alice is predeceased by her husband George A. Lavis, and her daughter E.D. Lavis, and her sister Marybelle Adams Rash. She is survived by three children, Andrew Stanley Lavis (Martha) of Davis, CA; Dean Allyn Lavis of Tucson; and Elizabeth Lavis Porter (Craig) of Tucson; granddaughter Johanna Pope (Doug) and great granddaughter Savannah Pope of San Diego, CA; granddaughter Arcadia Alice Hutton (Benjamin) of Tucson and great-grandchildren Austin Benjamin Hutton and Mikayla Rose Hutton; granddaughter Ariel Gale Porter of Flagstaff, AZ; and granddaughters Emma Ruth Feickert and Lucy Ellen Lavis Feickert of San Mateo, CA. Alice’s ashes will be interred at Fort Huachuca Post Cemetery at 10 a.m. on August 18, 2016. Those without military credentials please meet at the Main Gate off Highway 90, by 9:45 a.m., for a military escort to the grave site.
