About Alice Nash

15 Jun 2019 edits by profile Dean Richard Hobart (8th Great Grandson - Hobart, Packard, Reed, Nash) for birth, death, marriage, and children names to conform with most recent research from Source 1 below. The date of death is based on the date sons filed to be executors of husband's (their father's) will 31 Dec 1680.

Alice's birth name was most likely HIGGINS and NOT Burge/Burges as previously widely thought prior to 1997 research (Source 2 below).

1. The Nash Family of Weymouth, Massachusetts, by Richard H. Benson, Newbury Street Press/NEHGS, 1998

and additional information from

2. Probable English Origins of James and Alice Nash of Boston and Weymouth, by Richard H. Benson, NEHGR (New England Historical and Genealogical Register) Vol 151:Pg 166, 1997. (much of this information is within Source 1 above)

3. History of Weymouth Massachusetts Vol. 4 Genealogy of Weymouth Families, by George Walter Chamberlain, Weymouth Historical Society, 1923.

4. Samuel Nash entry, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633. Vol. 1-!!!, NEHGS, 1995 (AmericanAncestors.org online database 2010, pgs 1321-1324).

In case of future merges, the confirmed family group is James Nash and Alice (Higgins) Nash - Alice's parents are most likely NOT the Burges as previously cited in most lineages since 1800s to after publication of Source 2 above. Most online sources retain incorrect Burges parents.

Children (order and birth place uncertain)

- James - Most likely England Feb 1634 or 1635 - married Sarah Simmons (d. of Moses and Sarah Simmons)

- John - Most likely England Dec 1636 - married Rebecca Smith (d. of Lawrence and Mary Smith), then after his death she probably married Jeremiah Belcher

- Jacob - Most likely England prior to 1641- married Abigail Dyer (d. of Thomas and Agnes (Reed) Dyer)

- Joseph - Most likely England prior to 1641 - married Elizabeth Holbrook (d. of John and Elizabeth (Stream) Holbrook), and then Grace (maybe d. of Anthony and Barbara (Clap) (Weld) Stoddard).

- Sarah - Most likely England prior to 1641 - unmarried at time of father's will 1680

- Rebecca - Most likely England prior to 1641 - unmarried at time of father's will 1680

- Abigail - Most likely England prior to 1641 - possible unmarried daughter who died July 1676

- Mary - Most likely England prior to 1641 - married Moses Belcher (s. of Gregory and Catherine Belcher)

Note that Source 3 above listed only the following children and ordered with boys first: John, Jacob, Joseph, James, Sarah, Rebecca

The following was on this profile prior to the 15 Jun 2019 edits. More detailed information on deeds and early life is contained within Source 1 above.

It seems considerably more likely that James Nash of Weymouth's wife Alice had the last name Higgins, but no parents names are recorded.

GEDCOM Note

Name: HL Corbett. I, too, for a long time thought Alice Nash's maiden name was Burgess...but now I know that it was Alice HIGGINS, not Burgess...Richard Benson wrote NASH FAMILY OF WEYMOUTH,MA...his research was extensive and he proved the wedding records of Alice HIGGINS and James NASH in England. the book was a God-send because he is a noted researcher, former officer of NEHGS and I was lucky that he put so much effort into the NASH line...it saved me years of work!
