Alice Perceval

Alice Perceval was born in Australia in 1957, the daughter of artists John Perceval and Mary Boyd. Her principal medium is pastel, but her oeuvre includes life drawing, silk painting, ceramic sculpture and decoration. In recent years she has been exploring the traditional medium of egg tempera and gold leaf on wood.

Alice grew up in Melbourne and London. She studied ceramic sculpture and silk painting in Southern France, set up a silk painting studio in Herefordshire, and exhibited in London in 1980. She returned to Australia in '81, lived at Bundanon, Nowra and began extensive drawing of the bush, which provided studies for large silk screens. She also decorated ceramics on commission. Motifs included bush landscapes, seascapes and lovers. Perceval exhibited her work of the Shoalhaven district and flower paintings on silk in Sydney before returning to the U.K. in '85 to settle in Radnorshire in Wales and set up a permanent studio.

By the late '80s, Perceval had developed a distinctive and individual style in pastel. Her inspirational connection with the surrounding landscape continued to evolve alongside an increasing interest in the realm of the imagination. In the early '90s, she created a series of work featuring lovers, dancers and firebirds, that were to become a recurrent theme in her work. Exhibited East West Galleries London.

Since '94, Perceval has travelled annually to the South West of Ireland to paint the coastal landscape and decorate ceramics. In '97, she opened The Kings Head Gallery in Presteigne on the Welsh border, where she exhibited on a regular basis, as well as hosting life drawing groups.

Landscape, still-life, figurative work and portraiture in pastel have become central to Perceval's creative out-put. She has established a following which has resulted in commissions for landscape and portraiture. She has exhibited regularly at local venues, including The Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts, The Rodd (The Sidney Nolan Trust) and The Kings Head Gallery, and in commercial (Cardiff, Hereford, London, Hay-on-Wye) and public galleries in England, Wales, (Radnoshire Museum, Bleddfa Trust) Ireland (Blasket Centre) and Australia. Her work is represented in private collections around the world.
