About Alonso Jayme Rael de Aguilar
From To the End of the Earth: A History of the Crypto-Jews of New Mexico by Stanley M. Hordes (Columbia University Press, 2005, paperback edition, page 180):
"[New Mexico] Governor Otermín was replaced in 1683 by Domingo Jironza Petríz de Cruzate. Among the officials who joined Jironza's retinue that year, as notary of government and war, was a twenty-two-year-old man [Alonso Rael de Aguilar] who was to play an extremely significant role in post-reconquest New Mexico, holding almost every major office, from secretary to the governors of New Mexico to mayor of Santa Fe to protector of the Indians. Moreover, he was to serve as the progenitor for several families whom, three hundred years later, would assert a Jewish heritage."
From Origins of New Mexico Families: A Genealogy of the Spanish Colonial Period by Fray Angélico Chávez:
"He was a native of the City of Lorca in Múrcia. He took part in both Reconquest Entradas of 1692 and 1693, his name appearing in so many documents as Secretary of Government and War, Lieutenant General, Alcalde of Santa Fe, and Protector of the Indians, as to defy quoting countless sources."
