About Amalia Schaffa
Amalia survived the Theresienstadt concentration camp, the only member of her family to do so. Her sons Emil, Hans, and daughter Gisella (Krakauer) and their respective spouses and children were all deported to extermination camps and none survived. Three of her children, Julius, Greta, and Ilse were able to escape to England prior to the onset of war and following her liberation from Theresienstadt were able to bring her to England where she spent the last two years of her life. Her grandchildren Kurt and Edith Krakauer were able to make their way to Palestine by illegal transport and both survived the war. Her other grandsons, John and Eric, the sons of Julius, also survived and are still living.
