About Amanda Caroline Clark (Banta)
A story is told that while John was fighting with the Confederates, Amanda ("Nannie" as she was known) was living on the family farm with her children in a wooded area of DeKalb Co., Missouri. One day she saw a U.S. Army troop approaching the farm. She had seen much ravaging for food by the see-sawing of North/south troops through the countryside. She got the children out of sight, oot her long gun, and sat in a choir in front of the house with the gun across her lap and challenged the troop Captain. She said they could take some food from the smoke house
but to leave her the cow, pig, chickens and horse because she and the children needed them to live and Captain complied.
