Ambrose Lecomte ll started work on Magnolia P Big House in 1830, when he was 23 yrs old. The house was burned by the Union during the Civil War but was rebuilt by army Matthew Herzog in 1889, using the same massive brick pillars. walls, and foundations of the original home, The house is of Greek Revival style, Magnolia has the only row of brick slave quarters still standing in Louisiana It also has preserved a cotton gin containing a historic Cypress mule drawn cotton press, a Creole overseer's house, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and the pigeonnier, where pigeons and other birds are raised a cage.
Ambrose Lecomte was born in Natchitoches in 1807. In 1827, he married Marie Julie Buard of Natchitoches. He was a wealthy planter and turfman and was the owner of the famous race horses Lecomte and Flying Dutchman. This portrait was painted by Louis Antoine Collas when Ambrose Lecomte was 21 years old.
